Varuna, The National Writers' House

Residencies

The residency program at Varuna is the only national residency in Australia dedicated only to literature. We host more than 200 writers each year, offering an inspirational environment for committed writers from all genres to work undisturbed on their projects.

Six writers are in residence each week, staying between one and four weeks at Varuna. Writers enjoy unstructured time and space to write in a private studio, with all food provided and a daily prepared evening meal. Residents have access to one-on-one mentorship while in residence, and we encourage readings and feedback among writers, but Varuna residencies are mostly self-directed.

Residences at Varuna are available through the following pathways:

  • Fellowships: Callouts for a wide range of opportunities run throughout the year.

  • Alumni residencies. Varuna alumni can request a residency at any time.
