2019 Scribe & Varuna Residency: Fellowships Announced

Thank you to the editorial team at Scribe Publications for selecting the writers that will participate in the first year of the Scribe & Varuna Residency. Combining a Varuna residency with an intensive mentorship with Scribe editors, the inaugural 2019 program has a focus on non-fiction, specifically popular science, micro-history, and history from the perspective of diverse voices.

“We were so impressed with the talent and range of voices we saw in the applications this year. Our three fellowship recipients have each produced work of skill, depth, and originality, and I can’t wait to work with them over the week at Varuna to help them develop such excellent material,” said David Golding, Scribe senior editor.

Congratulations to the 2019 fellowship recipients:

Liana Joy Christensen, See the Islands

Francesca Rendle-Short, Floating towards Noah’s Ark

Annabel Stafford, Dr Webster & Mr Neville

Varuna received 40 manuscripts from writers across Australia for the 2019 Scribe & Varuna Residency. The manuscripts were each double-read in the first selection process, and a shortlisted selection as well as the complete set of applications with manuscripts were sent to the editorial team at Scribe Publications for their final selection.

We really appreciate the efforts of all the writers who submitted their manuscripts for the fellowship, and we regret that unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to provide individual feedback to all applicants. However, our assessor comments may be of interest. Keep writing!

We look forward to seeing Liana, Francesca and Annabel at Varuna later this year.
