Young Writers’ Program

The 2019 Varuna Young Writers’ Program is a series of three, day-long workshops teaching students from years 10, 11 and 12 about the craft of writing.

Dr Bernard Cohen, award-winning writer and experienced educator is facilitating the workshops which explore narrative voice, plot and characterisation through writing exercises and discussions. The young writers participating in the program also get a rare chance to visit Varuna, where they have an opportunity to meet with local authors and writers in residence.

Participating students are from Blue Mountains High Schools and are selected by their English teacher.

Following on from the workshops attendees are invited to attend a monthly Varuna Young Writers’ Meet Up at The Little Lost Bookshop in Katoomba for a program of regular writing exercises and sharing with other writers.  The Meet Ups are facilitated by poet, teacher and Varuna consultant, Vanessa Kirkpatrick.

This program is generously funded by the Blue Mountains City of the Arts Trust and supported by Dr Bernard Cohen, Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) and the Little Lost Bookshop.
